MIMO - When Music is Your Fix

Acts To Watch For in 2013 (Part 1)

It’s that time of year—time for everyone’s year-end favorite lists, including a few of them right here on MIMO. It’s fun to look back at our top musical performers, songs, albums and what-not over the past year. But I thought it would also be fun to take a look forward—to point out bands and artists that are on the radar for 2013, acts that I think you’ll probably be hearing a lot more about in the coming year.

On this list you’ll find artists and bands from a variety of genres—acts that are up-and-coming, and acts that have grown big and are about to get bigger still. In no particular order, here are a few noteworthys that we’re keeping our eye on in 2013.

ED SHEERAN

Between his songwriting collaboration with Taylor Swift on Red and his own charting success with his single “The A Team,” this young British singer-songwriter is poised for a lot of international attention this year for his unique acoustic-driven blend of folk-pop. Watch for Sheeran on tour with Taylor Swift this year.

OF MONSTERS AND MEN

This energetic indie-pop band from Iceland has been building up a big head of steam in 2012 with memorable tunes like “Little Talks” and “Mountain Sound.” I have a feeling this band will be dominating airwaves all over the world next year.

FRANK OCEAN

Forget about the waves this guy made last summer in the R&B community with his admissions of same-sex attraction; Frank Ocean’s music on its own is being hailed as a potential reshaping of the R&B landscape. You’re gonna be hearing a lot more from this guy.

EMELI SANDE´

Scotland-based songwriter Emeli Sandé has already had a successful behind-the-scenes career writing songs for the likes of Leona Lewis, Rihanna and Cher Lloyd. Now, this jazz/soul singer is poised to take the spotlight on her own. Her album Our Version of Events has already outsold Adele’s 21 in the UK this year, and her single “Next To Me” has gotten a lot of attention in these parts, as well. I suspect you’re going to hear her name a lot more in 2013.

ONE DIRECTION

(Sigh) Yeah, I know these boys are already big stuff, to the point that some people are already growing tired of hearing about them. But I predict this boy band from across the pond has got at least one more year of superstardom ahead of them. 2012 was a great year for 1D; expect more of the same next year.

FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE

It’s a great time to be a young, handsome guy in country music right now, singing about how much you like girls; so it stands to reason that two of ‘em in a duo together pose twice the threat. “Cruise” has been one of the hottest singles in country music over the past couple of months, and with the release of their debut full-length album Here’s To the Good Times mere weeks ago, I think 2013 is gonna have a lot of good things in store fore Florida Georgia Line.

IMAGINE DRAGONS

2012 saw this indie-rock outfit from Vegas go from relative obscurity to the national spotlight, making the late-show television rounds and getting some great placements for their songs “Radioactive” and “It’s Time.” Expect even more of the same next year.

In part 2 of this series, we’ll post a few “dark horses”—bands and artists you might not have heard of yet, but are likely to hear more about in 2013. Stay tuned…

About the Author

on MUSIC IS MY OXYGEN WEEKLY.

David Tillman is an independent composer/arranger whose primary work involves writing jingles for commercials for radio and television, with several film and television placements to his credit as well. David has a fascination for all things related to the music business and the music industry in general, an obsession which his wife finds to be mildly unhealthy at times. His personal tastes in music are in electronica and industrial rock, and include The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk and Nine Inch Nails (he loves that Trent Reznor is writing soundtracks!). When not in his office or in his man-cave, David enjoys skiing, hiking, the occasional game of golf, and sometimes just lounging by the pool. David lives with his wife and three children in Los Angeles, CA.
