MIMO - When Music is Your Fix

American Music Awards 2012 Preview

As what I like to call “awards show season” gets into full swing over the fall and winter months, the next one to watch is the American Music Awards, airing live this Sunday night, November 18, 2012, on the ABC network.

Now in its 40th year, the AMA’s were actually created by the late Dick Clark as a replacement/competitor for the Grammys when ABC’s contract with the awards show expired in 1973. While Grammys are awarded by entertainment industry members of the Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the AMA’s are awarded by voting fans, who for the past six years have been able to vote online. (Forget it—voting is closed for this year.)

Sunday’s awards show will feature performances by some of the hottest acts in music right now, including No Doubt, Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, The Wanted, Ke$ha, Taylor Swift, Pitbull and many others. Stevie Wonder is also slated to present a special tribute to the award show creator Dick Clark, who passed away earlier this year. Additionally, recent K-pop sensation Psy will perform, and will receive this year’s “New Media Award” for the global Internet success of his video “Gangnam Style.”

AMA nominees will be given awards in 19 categories—no, make that 20. As an indication of global music trends, a new award category was created this year for Electronic Dance Music (EDM). Skrillex, Calvin Harris and David Guetta are the first nominees for this category.

The 40th Annual American Music Awards will air on ABC Sunday, November 18 at 8:00 PM EST, 7:00 PM CST. Below is a full list of this year’s nominees.

About the Author

on MUSIC IS MY OXYGEN WEEKLY.

David Tillman is an independent composer/arranger whose primary work involves writing jingles for commercials for radio and television, with several film and television placements to his credit as well. David has a fascination for all things related to the music business and the music industry in general, an obsession which his wife finds to be mildly unhealthy at times. His personal tastes in music are in electronica and industrial rock, and include The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk and Nine Inch Nails (he loves that Trent Reznor is writing soundtracks!). When not in his office or in his man-cave, David enjoys skiing, hiking, the occasional game of golf, and sometimes just lounging by the pool. David lives with his wife and three children in Los Angeles, CA.
