It really says something about a rock band’s grass-roots popularity when they’ve all but gone off the grid for six years, with very little but rumors about a new album to go on, and when they play a new song at a show with no introduction, the fan video goes viral. This week, the Interwebs lit up when punk/alternative band Brand New gave concertgoers a foretaste of their long-anticipated upcoming fifth album with a new tune, “Don’t Feel Anything.”
Perhaps even more remarkable is how the song was delivered, and what has happened since. Appearing April 8 at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, CO, true to form, the band opened the show with “Don’t Feel Anything,” offering no introduction and no explanation. (No one had any context for the song until a fan at the show managed to snag a photo of the setlist and post it on Twitter, which was picked up by Property of Zack.) Couple that information with a smartphone video taken by a fan in the balcony, and you have a recipe for “going viral.” This understandably sub-par video shows you nothing but stage lights, but it’s already gotten over 68,000 views in 2 days.
In fact, the only indication Brand New has given that something is afoot is that they recently wiped their Instagram account and posted the a new promo photo (shown at the top of this article). That, and the fact that years after soliciting fans to send in a dollar, they are reportedly finally sending out the long-awaited lyric books for their 2006 album The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me—which are also being made available at shows.
It will be interesting in the next few months to see what unfolds—and even more interesting to see how fans respond.
