In keeping with their apparent new bent toward the electro side of soft rock, this week Coldplay released their new single “Magic,” accompanied by a music video that is every bit as captivating as the song itself.
Similar in its repetitive nature to their earlier single “Midnight,” “Magic” has a slightly more upbeat drum loop, as well as much stronger pop sensibilities. The result is a singable, ear-wormy deal that carries on in your head long after the song ends. I’ll be highly surprised if this one doesn’t take a spot alongside “The Scientist,” “Yellow” and “Clocks” as one of their standout hits.
But equally remarkable is the music video for “Magic” (shared below). Directed by noted music video director Jonas Åkerlund (Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful”, U2’s “Beautiful Day”), the video is patterned as a short from the silent film era, and accompanies the music in a way that you feel like the experience would be incomplete without it.
Coldplay’s newest album Ghost Stories comes out May 19.
