Durango Songwriters Expo: A Connection Point for Singer/Songwriters

For singer/songwriters and indie musicians at any skill level, one upcoming event worth your consideration is the Durango Songwriters Expo, which occurs October 4-6, 2012 in Broomfield, CO.

While not a widely known event compared to others, since 1996 the D.S.E. has been serving as a solid connection point for singer/songwriters and music industry professionals. With events held three times a year in various parts of the country, the Durango Songwriters Expo provides an intimate, relaxed and informal setting in which musicians can connect with one another as well as present their work to actual industry professionals for helpful critique and possible song placements.

The next Durango Songwriters Expo is slated for October 4-6 at the Omni Interlocken Resort, located between Denver and Boulder in the town of Broomfield, Colorado. This three-day event will feature a number of helpful panel discussions and listening/critique sessions attended by over 40 noted music industry professionals, including music supervisors, record label representatives, and reps from ASCAP, BMI and SESAC, among others. There will also be songwriter showcase performances, open mics and a closing concert the final night.

For novices, the D.S.E. provides a great opportunity to learn and grow, as well as to connect with other songwriters (many collaborations occur on-site during the conferences). For more serious musicians, it provides an opportunity to get the attention of industry professionals and pitch their material. In this regard, the Durango Songwriters Expo is far more than just an educational enrichment opportunity; it is a chance to connect directly to the industry in an intimate setting (which is why each D.S.E. event is limited to 200 attendees).

Perhaps the most powerful aspect of the showcase is the listening sessions, during which attendees can play their recorded songs on CD for a small panel of industry representatives for meaningful feedback and critique. Many of these panelists come to the Durango Songwriters Expo for the express purpose of looking for new material, and according to event host Jim Attebury, last year’s Broomfield event resulted in song publishing deals for two singer/songwriters, and film/television song placements for several others.

Considering that conference attendance is limited to 200 people who will be sharing the attention of more than 40 music industry professionals, perhaps you can see why the Durango Songwriters Expo is such an opportunity for musicians.

Enrollment is still open for the Broomfield, Colorado event at press time. Early bird pricing is available for $250 until August 10 ($299 after that date), and the Omni Interlocken is offering special pricing for conference guests. The quickest way to get all the details and register for the event is to download the Durango Songwriters Showcase brochure here. For more information, check out the D.S.E. website.
