Over the first three X-men films three different actors played the fan favorite X-woman Shadowcat aka Kitty Pryde. In the final installment of the trilogy Ms Pryde was played by relative unknown Ellen Page. Since X3, Page’s profile has skyrocketed. She’s become one of the most bankable leading ladies under 40. Well, it seems that at one point in time Joss Whedon wanted to do a Kitty Pryde spin off movie. And he even pitched it. Unfortunately, Fox wasn’t as keen on the idea. When questioned about his pitch Whedon said, “They don’t seem to think that that’s awesome. I don’t know why.”
Whedon is now synonymous with the Marvel brand. He’s successfully made Avengers, the Holy Grail of comic book movies. Whedon also has a history with the X-men and Kitty specifically. He wrote the first twenty five issues of Astonishing X-men, which is decidedly Kitty centric.
Well, it seems that Page is just as interested as Whedon in a Kitty solo film. When Vulture questioned her on the topic she had this to say:
Well, I’m available! [Laughs.] I love that. Kitty Pryde’s awesome. I’m super grateful to be the actress who’s gotten to be her, and you only desperately hope that the true fans who have a right to demand what they want and who have been passionate about these stories for a really long time, that you can pull it off for them. I would be so thrilled to play Kitty Pryde again. I really would.
The future seems open. With Jason Reitman recently confirming that he’d been asked by Fox to re-team with Diablo Cody and Page to bring a Shadowcat film to the big screen, which ultimately fell apart, and with Page back in the black leather for X-men: Days of Future Past you never know what will happen.
