First Look at Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice

Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest picture, The Master, might not have been universally heralded as a masterpiece like his previous works but that’s not slowing him down. PTA is currently deep in filming his adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s Inherent Vice.

Anderson is pulling together a massively star studded cast, as he usually does, with Joaquin Phoenix playing the lead role of Doc Sportello, a drug addled detective. The cast also includes Owen Wilson, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Torro, Reese Witherspoon, Jenna Malone, Martin Short, and also possibly Sean Penn.

Anderson is know to be extremely liberal when it comes to adapting books into films. His adaptation of There Will Be Blood is almost unrecognizable from the original source. That being said, it’s still a masterpiece.

The book synopsis for Inherent vice is:

It’s been a while since Doc Sportello has seen his ex- girlfriend. Suddenly she shows up with a story about a plot to kidnap a billionaire land developer whom she just happens to be in love with. It’s the tail end of the psychedelic sixties in L.A., and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” except that this one usually leads to trouble.

We’ll see what PTA delivers and if it’s anything even remotely close to that.
