Freed Pussy Riot Members to Appear at Brooklyn Concert Event

Scheduled to speak at Amnesty International concert at Barclay’s Center Feb. 5

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina, the two members of Russian art collective Pussy Riot who were recently freed from prison, are scheduled to make an appearance at a human rights concert in Brooklyn, according to a press release from Amnesty International.

The human rights organization says the pair will be appearing at a special concert event dubbed “Bringing Human Rights Home” at Barclay’s Center on February 5, where they will speak to concert attendees “about prisoners of conscience: people who have chosen a non-violent path yet are jailed for their beliefs, color of skin, gender, or sexual orientation.”  The two former prisoners are perhaps more qualified than most to speak about such issues, having been imprisoned for nearly two years in Russia on charges of “hooliganism” after staging an anti-Putin “punk prayer” in a Moscow church in 2012. They were released from prison two days before Christmas under the terms of a Russian amnesty bill, which some have suggested was a political maneuver to improve Vladimir Putin’s public image in advance of next months Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

Tolokonnikova and Alekhina said in a statement, “We are happy to support Amnesty International’s work on behalf of human rights and political prisoners.  We, more than anyone, understand how important Amnesty’s work is in connecting activists to prisoners.  A month ago, we were freed from Russian prison camps. We will never forget what it’s like to be in prison after a political conviction. We have vowed to continue helping those who remain behind bars and we hope to see you all at the Amnesty International concert on February 5th in Brooklyn!”

The Bringing Human Rights Home concert event will feature performances from The Flaming Lips, The Fray, Imagine Dragons, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Cold War Kids, Tegan and Sara, Cake and Colbie Caillat, with more artists yet to be announced.
