Named after both their love of Greek mythology and dancehall legend Don ‘Ninjaman’ Gorgon, London house duo Gorgon City, aka DJ/producers Kye Gibbon and Matt Scott, are the latest act to emerge from the Black Butter Records stable that has already spawned UK chart-toppers in the shape of Rudimental and Clean Bandit.
In fact, the artists formerly known as bass maestros Foamo and RackNRuin very nearly added to that tally last week, with the soulful “Ready For Your Love” only denied the top spot by the latest will.i.am dirge and their aforementioned labelmates’ glorious fusion of classical and classic house, “Rather Be.”
But their current collaboration with rising teenage prodigy MNEK is unlikely to be their only shot at the big one. Indeed, after teaming up in 2012, Gorgon City have become the most credible challengers for Disclosure’s deep house throne, taking up residency at Ibiza’s Space, performing at the Glastonbury, Global Gathering and Isle Of Wight festivals and releasing a critically-acclaimed EP last year entitled Real.
Featuring a guest appearance from Scottish chanteuse Yasmin, the EP’s title track lead single gave the duo their first crossover hit. But while the bass-heavy instrumentals of “Thor,” “Athena” and “10 Below” all hinted at a darker and grimier direction, the list of names that are set to appear on their forthcoming debut album suggest that the pair are to continue giving a leg up to the new class of vocalists. Alongside the more established Irish soulman Maverick Sabre, watch for former Kid British frontman Bipolar Sunshine, acoustic troubadour Josh Record and London singer-songwriter Jess Glynne to lend their unique tones to the new record, which is expected to hit the shelves in the summer.
But before that, Gorgon City – who have also lent their magic touches to remixes of Basement Jaxx’s “Back 2 The Wild,” Jess Mills’ “For My Sins” and Santigold’s “Disparate Youth” – will support Rudimental on their UK tour, appear at the Miami Winter Music Conference and continue to host their weekly Sunday night show on Rinse FM.
