For some artists, it’s apparently feast or famine. After a seven-year hiatus from releasing new music (during which he ventured into several acclaimed acting roles), superstar Justin Timberlake made a highly respectable comeback earlier this year with the release of The 20/20 Experience. Even then, we were hearing reports that Timberlake had been extremely productive in the studio preparing for 20/20 and had actually come up with far too much material for just one album.
Turns out the reports were true. Never mind the fact that 20/20 is the top-selling album of the year so far—there’s still more to come. This week, Timberlake unveiled an 11-track listing for The 20/20 Experience: 2 of 2, which is now set for a September 30 release. The follow-up album’s first single “Take Back the Night” (which almost prompted a lawsuit from an anti-rape foundation bearing the same name) is already sitting at No. 38 on the Billboard Top 100.
Track names on the new LP like “Murder” and “True Blood” (compared to tamer titles like “Strawberry Bubblegum,” “Suit and Tie” and “That Girl” on the first installment) suggest that part 2 might carry some darker themes compared to its predecessor. In a conversation with Rolling Stone, Timberlake’s manager Johnny Wright suggests this was intentional, that songs were grouped for the two releases according to mood. “For me, the first half is about new love, the honeymoon, when you’re just getting into a relationship,” Wright tells Rolling Stone. “And when you get to the second part, the relationship is established and things are going on.”
