It may be Thanksgiving weekend, but there’s still plenty happening in the world of music. (And by that, I mean more than just Black Friday deals at Guitar Center.) Here are a few music news headlines from the past week that you might have missed.
FLAMING LIPS’ WAYNE COYNE SHUTS DOWN OKC AIRPORT
It seems like Wayne Coyne gets into our week in review more often than most. Earlier this year, it was his spat with Erykah Badu over the minor issue of nudity in a music video. On November 10, he apparently prompted security to shut down of the Oklahoma City Airport for trying to board a plane with a hand grenade in his carry-on luggage. The grenade was an inactive shell (no explosives) spray-painted gold that he’d apparently picked up at a party, and no one was ever in danger, but procedure required shutting down the airport until the misunderstanding was resolved.
While Coyne admitted to Pitchfork that it was just a “dumb accident,” and although he tweeted an apology to everyone who missed flights as a result, he’s only kind of sorry about it. “I don’t feel wholly responsible if people missed their flights. I’m not making the rules. It’s not illegal for me to have that grenade with me.” Umm…actually, Wayne, hand grenades (living or dead) are definitely on the TSA’s banned list for items in carry-on luggage. Right up there with toothpaste….
MADONNA FACING LAWSUIT IN RUSSIA FOR PROMOTING GAY RIGHTS—OH, WAIT, NEVER MIND
Madonna seems to be another one who regularly makes this column. Remember a few weeks ago when we mentioned she was being sued for breaking certain anti-gay laws in St. Petersburg by passing out anti-homophobia bracelets at her show, and so on? Well, this week, the judge threw out the case—but not before threatening to throw the journalists out of the court for laughing during the apparently comical trial. Madonna herself didn’t see fit to attend, and her publicist says not to expect any further comment.
PUSSY RIOT MEMBER IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT—BY HER OWN REQUEST
And speaking of Russia…two members of punk collective Pussy Riot, you may recall, are currently serving two years in a Russian prison camp for their anti-Putin performance in a cathedral in Moscow. This week, one of the members, Maria Alyokhina, was moved to solitary confinement, apparently at her own request. BBC reports that tensions were escalating between Alyokhina and her prison mates over a refusal to participate in a hunger strike. She reportedly put in a transfer request to prison leadership, who moved her to a one-person cell. A third member of Pussy Riot was also sentenced, but was released on appeal.
Hope your Thanksgiving was happy. Have a great weekend!
