As far as song titles go, One Direction’s new single “Best Song Ever” has an incredible standard to live up to, and as far as songs go, it would be a stretch to say it lives up to its name. However, when you listen to it with the accompanying video, it makes you at least feel like it comes awfully darn close to the mark.
The song itself was leaked days ago, prompting an earlier-than-expected official release from the boy band in order to keep pace. The video, however, released just yesterday, is already breaking viewing records, garnering 10.9 million views on VEVO within its first 24 hours, according to Billboard. (As of today, it’s got over 19 million YouTube views.)
And with good reason. Not only is the song incredibly catchy, but the video is truly entertaining as well.
Doubling as a music video and a plug for the band’s upcoming film This Is Us (slated for an August 30 release), “Best Song Ever” tries out the band mates’ acting chops, with Niall and Louis playing middle-aged studio executives, Harry playing a nerdy marketing guy, Liam playing the choreographer, and Zayn dressing in drag as a not-so-sexy office assistant—all combining to pitch the film idea to…um…themselves. (You just have to see it.) In most cases, this would be a recipe for a train wreck, but the guys actually pull it off—great comedic timing, self-awareness and just plain fun. (They even get the American accents mostly right.) By the time the song kicks in about two minutes into the video, you’re hooked. From there, the imagery includes the boys trashing the office and interacting with their alter egos, footage from the upcoming film and the road, and even some tasteful actual choreography (hey, they’re not N*Sync, but still).
Despite the song’s tongue-in-cheek name, it would still be quite a stretch to call this the “Best Song Ever.” But it could easily be considered the feel-good song of the summer. Check out the video for yourself.
