Pop Rewind: Mariah Carey “All I Want For Christmas Is You”

Continuing on with our December holiday-themed pop rewinds, today let’s take a look at a more modern classic, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey.

Co-written by Carey and Walter Afanasieff, this song was first recorded in 1994, and made the Top Ten in album charts around the world. While relatively few original Christmas tunes written in the past few decades have achieved the same level of staying power as more traditional classics, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” was hailed by critics as a holiday classic pretty much right out of the gate, and its popularity with audiences and radio playlists has never waned. Loosely reminiscent of 60’s girl groups like The Ronettes, the song has a bouncy, upbeat and festive feel that is just downright contagious. The song has gone on to be one of the top selling singles of all time, not just the holidays.

Carey released two different videos of “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” both of which I’ve shared below. The first is the original version, with mainly home-video style footage of Carey at home around the Christmas tree, and frolicking in the snow with then-husband Tommy Mottola dressed as Santa Claus. The second is a tip-o-the-hat to The Ronettes, shot in black-and-white. Both videos, incidentally, could win an award for “Least Amount of Cleavage Shown In a Mariah Carey Video”—that is, if such an award existed. Enjoy!

About the Author

on MUSIC IS MY OXYGEN WEEKLY.

Tim Ferrar's interest in pop and rock started as a child, listening to Top-40 radio for hours on end while playing air guitar in his bedroom. Eventually air guitar led to electric guitar, and Tim began playing in bands and writing his own songs. With an admitted weakness for "a great hook or a great guitar riff," Tim's musical tastes are broad and varied, ranging from Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga on the pop side to Bon Jovi and Foo Fighters on the rock side- making him the ideal guy to cover our Rock and Pop categories. By day, Tim is a mild-mannered accountant in Chicago. By night, he rocks out on electric guitar in a cover band in various clubs around town- much to the surprise of some of his clients.
