Taylor Swift Releases New Single, Announces New Album “Red”

During a Google+ Hangout live chat on Monday, country superstar Taylor Swift surprised and delighted fans with an announcement of her new album Red, to be released October 22. She also announced the release of the first single from the album this week, titled “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

Surprise. It’s about an ex. Anyhow…

Swift said during the chat that she had been working on material for this album for about two years, and that she had a hard time selecting from about 30 songs to reduce the track list to 16. Swift also mentioned that she enlisted the help of several co-writers for the songs on Red (including UK singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran), which is of particular interest since Swift is known for writing most, if not all, of her own material. The singer suggested this marks a “new direction” for her music, one which she’s excited for her fans to hear.

If the single is indicative of the rest of the songs on the track list, this “new direction” on Red may mark a complete shift for Taylor Swift from country to pop; “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” rests solely in the pop category. Nevertheless, we’ll have to wait and see. Meanwhile, a lyric video for the single is up on YouTube, so I embedded it here. See what you think.

About the Author

on MUSIC IS MY OXYGEN WEEKLY.

Music blogger Rob Burkhardt has been a fan of country music since he was a child, cutting his teeth on the sounds of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Reba McIntyre and George Jones. In the words of the now-legendary Barbara Mandrell song, he was "country when country wasn't cool." Nowadays, Rob is both intrigued and excited about the mainstream crossover appeal of modern country, as seen in the success of artists like Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts and Lady Antebellum. Even so, Rob's personal tastes in country music remain "old school," tied to the great legends of country. When he's not blogging about country music, Rob Burkhardt holds a day job as a middle school teacher, and is an avid sports fan. He lives with his wife and two teenage girls in southern Ohio.
