The Killers Release “Runaways” Video, Prepare for New Album and Comeback Tour

Perhaps three years seem too short of a span for a band to be on break and then stage a “comeback,” but after The Killers went on hiatus in 2009, some of us wondered if they would actually be back. Sam’s Town and Day and Age hadn’t done quite as well as the band’s debut Hot Fuss in 2004, and after Brandon Flowers’ tepid solo effort during the break, we thought maybe this band had said all they had to say musically.

However, there’s been plenty of evidence the past few months that The Killers are not only coming back, but they mean business. The rumored new record that the band worked on for a year now has a title (Battle Born, which is apparently quite apropos) and a release date (September 17). Additionally, on July 19, The Killers performed a one-off “comeback” show in an intimate venue in Asheville, NC, during which they debuted four songs off the new record (wouldn’t you have liked to have been at that show?).

And this week, The Killers have put out a video of “Runaways,” their first new single from the record—and if the rest of the record is anything like this song, then it’s safe to say that this band is indeed “back.” This is some of the most solid stuff we’ve heard from them in years. (You can take a listen below.)

Meanwhile, according to the band’s website, The Killers won’t just be sitting around waiting for their new record to come out; they have tour dates scheduled for the European music festival circuit throughout August and September, as well as a tour of Australia in early 2013.

As for the rest of us—well—we do have to sit and wait for the record to come out. But at least we have this video to tide us over.

About the Author

on MUSIC IS MY OXYGEN WEEKLY.

Tim Ferrar's interest in pop and rock started as a child, listening to Top-40 radio for hours on end while playing air guitar in his bedroom. Eventually air guitar led to electric guitar, and Tim began playing in bands and writing his own songs. With an admitted weakness for "a great hook or a great guitar riff," Tim's musical tastes are broad and varied, ranging from Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga on the pop side to Bon Jovi and Foo Fighters on the rock side- making him the ideal guy to cover our Rock and Pop categories. By day, Tim is a mild-mannered accountant in Chicago. By night, he rocks out on electric guitar in a cover band in various clubs around town- much to the surprise of some of his clients.
