A big screen re-boot of Man from U.N.C.L.E. has been simmering for years. The incarnation that got the furthest was a George Clooney vehicle to be directed by Stephen Soderbergh. Unfortunately, due to a back injury, Clooney had to bow and and the deal fell apart.
Well, it appears that history has a way of repeating itself. Tom Cruise was all set up to star in a big screen Man From U.N.C.L.E to be directed by Guy Ritchie and co-starring Armie Hammer, but, just like the big C, Cruise is bowing out. Reports are suggesting that Cruise is focusing on Mission Impossible 5: The Totally Necessary Sequel.
Strangely enough, WB isn’t letting the project die. They’re pushing ahead with it and keeping Armie Hammer and Guy Ritchie. Presumably WB is searching for a leading man who has enough star power to replace Cruise and justify the undoubtedly massive budget that the film will inevitably require.
Johnny Depp? Robert Downey Jr? Denzel?
Who could possibly step into Cruise’s shoes?
I’m personally hoping for Idris Elba. I know he’s not a big enough star but he’d be perfect for the role.
