Video Shows Cossacks Whipping Pussy Riot Members in Sochi

Russian feminist punk collective Pussy Riot seem more determined than ever to use their newfound worldwide renown to bring negative publicity to the Russian government. A  video posted by Sky News shows Cossack militia disrupting an attempted protest by Pussy Riot members during the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

As the video portrays, the members in their signature colored masks were just beginning to perform when the Cossacks (who are employed as patrols by the Russian police) began attacking them with whips, knocking them down and forcibly removing their balaclavas.

One face in the video may appear familiar; one of the performers was reportedly Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, one of the three Pussy Riot members whose imprisonment for “hooliganism” first put the punk collective in the global spotlight.  Tolokonnikova and Maria Ayokhina were recently released from prison in advance of the Olympics, and have since missed no opportunity to publicly denounce Vladimir Putin, including a recent trip the U.S.

Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina had been in the news several times during the week prior to the release of this video, claiming that they had been detained multiple times by Russian police at the Sochi games, before any protests had even been staged.  The International Olympic Committee has distanced itself from the Pussy Riot protests, with spokesman Mark Adams saying, “Venues are not the places to have demonstrations.”

Last month, an anonymous article on the Pussy Riot blog denounced Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina as no longer representatives of the collective. It would appear they have resolved their differences in their mutual resolve.

David Tillman is an independent composer/arranger whose primary work involves writing jingles for commercials for radio and television, with several film and television placements to his credit as well. David has a fascination for all things related to the music business and the music industry in general, an obsession which his wife finds to be mildly unhealthy at times. His personal tastes in music are in electronica and industrial rock, and include The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk and Nine Inch Nails (he loves that Trent Reznor is writing soundtracks!). When not in his office or in his man-cave, David enjoys skiing, hiking, the occasional game of golf, and sometimes just lounging by the pool. David lives with his wife and three children in Los Angeles, CA.
