It’s been a great big year for A Great Big World. The duo of Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino have made a splash with their brand of piano-driven pop, touring with the likes of Ingrid Michaelson and landing two charting singles before even releasing a full-length album.
Their latest single, “Say Something,” got a huge boost recently when they released a new version of it with Christina Aguilera adding vocal harmonies, then performed it with her on NBC’s The Voice. The song broke the Top-40 this week, landing at Number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100. Aguilera is slated to team with AGBW again to perform “Say Something” during this weekend’s American Music Awards telecast.
The song’s popularity is definitely due to more than just a promotional boost from a big name; “Say Something” is a specimen of brilliant pop writing, a perfect example of less being more. It’s a simple, yet profoundly emotional lyric laid over a minimal chord progression, all built around a single piano note that drones on throughout the song. And pun intended, it’s striking a chord with audiences everywhere.
This week, A Great Big World released the official music video for the Aguilera version of “Say Something,” a series of emotional images befitting the song. AGBW’s debut full-length album, Is Anybody Out There, is due out in January 2014.
