CMA 2013 Awards Nominees Announced

Swift, Musgraves lead with six each

As the 47th Annual Country Music Association (CMA) Awards nominees were announced Tuesday morning in New York City (by Sheryl Crow and Florida Georgia Line, in case you were interested), two surprise names led the pack for largest number of nods: Taylor Swift and Kacey Musgraves, who landed six nominations each.

Musgraves is a bit of a surprise mainly because she is such a newcomer, but her edgy album Same Trailer, Different Park has been making lots of waves in the country scene over the past several months. Musgraves is up for New Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Song of the Year (twice—for her own song “Merry Go ‘Round” and for contributing to Miranda Lambert’s hit “Mama’s Broken Heart), and Female Vocalist of the Year (up against heavy hitters Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift).

Speaking of Swift, she’s the other surprise, mainly because she hasn’t collected a whole lot of country-related nominations or awards this past year. Her latest album Red is more of a pop record, after all, and given her attitude lately, it seems the overall vibe within the country scene hasn’t been quite as amicable toward her as in years past. Nevertheless, she also managed to pick up six nods this year, including Musical Event of the Year, Single of the Year, Music Video of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year, and her third run at the big award, Entertainer of the Year. Granted, half of those nominations are sort of piggybacked due to Swift’s collaboration with Tim McGraw on the hit “Highway Don’t Care.” But a nomination is a nomination.

Others on the list of nominees were ultimately no surprise. Current country A-lister Blake Shelton trails just behind Musgraves and Swift with five nominations; other multiple nods go to familiar names Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean and Tim McGraw, all of whom received three nominations each. Keith Urban, who may very well hold the record for number of CMA nominations without a win since 2009, gets four nods this year.

The full list of nominees is below. For the sixth year running, the CMA Awards show will be hosted by the popular team of Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood. The live telecast will take place November 6 on ABC.

Music blogger Rob Burkhardt has been a fan of country music since he was a child, cutting his teeth on the sounds of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Reba McIntyre and George Jones. In the words of the now-legendary Barbara Mandrell song, he was "country when country wasn't cool." Nowadays, Rob is both intrigued and excited about the mainstream crossover appeal of modern country, as seen in the success of artists like Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts and Lady Antebellum. Even so, Rob's personal tastes in country music remain "old school," tied to the great legends of country.
