In 2007, the Dave Matthews Band song “Out Of My Hands” appeared on the soundtrack for a film called The Hitcher. Last weekend, it appears Matthews himself became “the hitcher”—only with a more positive outcome.
On Saturday, according to reports, a woman named Emily Krauss and her boyfriend were en route to a Dave Matthews Band show in Hershey, PA, when they approached a man with a busted bicycle hitchhiking by the roadside. It turns out it was Matthews himself, needing a ride to his own concert.
Apparently, Matthews’ bicycle had broken down, and the singer happened to be without a cell phone at the time. Grateful for the lift, he rewarded the couple with an invitation to dinner, front-row seats to the show, and even an ad-libbed serenade from the stage.
The celebrity hitchhiker incident brings back memories of a similar story from a couple of years ago, when Edmonton Oilers hockey player saw U2 frontman Bono caught in the rain with his assistant on a West Vancouver roadside, gave him a lift, and got VIP passes to the band’s Edmonton show.
So apparently, it isn’t always like the movies. Every once in awhile, it pays to pick up a hitchhiker. Just be sure you know who it is.
