Piano-rock legend Elton John is reportedly “recovering well” after undergoing an operation last week at Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco to remove his appendix. The 66-year-old is currently recuperating at his home in southern France.
Elton John’s appendix became news last month when he encountered severe stomach pain while on tour. By the time he saw the doctors, his condition was apparently quite serious (a “walking time bomb,” as Elton describes himself), prompting him to cancel all remaining tour dates through the summer and undergo a round of antibiotic treatments before the surgery could be performed.
In a statement on his website, the singer thanked his fans for their support: “I would like to thank the literally thousands of people who have sent me get well cards and messages over the past two weeks. Your well wishes have touched me deeply and will play a big part in my recovery.”
Elton John is expected to be recovered enough to resume touring next month, and not a moment too soon. He is slated to receive the first-ever Icon Award at the Brit Awards on September 2, and his new album, The Diving Board, his first in seven years, is scheduled to drop on September 24.
