Green Day “Broadway Idiot” Documentary to Release This Fall

Let’s face it: punk-rock outfit Green Day have always seemed like the last band you’d expect to have a Broadway musical created after one of their records. (Almost as unlikely as Bono and The Edge doing a Spider-man musical—but I digress…) Nevertheless, the resulting stage adaptation of American Idiot went on to play over 400 shows on Broadway starting in 2010, garnering a Grammy, two Tonys and a Drama Desk award.

Now, for those of us still scratching our heads over this one, a new documentary is set to tell the whole story, as Variety reports. Broadway Idiot, directed by Doug Hamilton and produced by Ira Pittleman, chronicles the process of collaboration between Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and stage director Michael Mayer in developing the concepts for translating the album to the stage. The documentary premiered last spring at SXSW.

Broadway Idiot will open on October 11 in select New York theaters, with a wide theatrical and video-on-demand release set for a week later.

About the Author

Tim Ferrar's interest in pop and rock started as a child, listening to Top-40 radio for hours on end while playing air guitar in his bedroom. Eventually air guitar led to electric guitar, and Tim began playing in bands and writing his own songs. With an admitted weakness for "a great hook or a great guitar riff," Tim's musical tastes are broad and varied, ranging from Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga on the pop side to Bon Jovi and Foo Fighters on the rock side- making him the ideal guy to cover our Rock and Pop categories. By day, Tim is a mild-mannered accountant in Chicago. By night, he rocks out on electric guitar in a cover band in various clubs around town- much to the surprise of some of his clients.
