Green Day Makes a Memory at iHeartRadio Festival

Apparently, you don’t notify Billy Joe Armstrong of punk band Green Day via teleprompter that he has one minute left to play.

As Billboard reports, Day One of the 2nd Annual iHeartRadio Music Festival came to a raucous close last night during Green Day’s closing set at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, when someone upstairs apparently made the ill-advised decision to post a one-minute warning on the teleprompter.

After having their start time delayed 25 minutes due to extended sets by earlier artists, Green Day was preparing to share some new songs from their upcoming project Uno! when the offensive notification came on the teleprompter. Frontman Armstrong was incensed. “One minute? You’re f**kin’ kidding me! I’m not f**ckin’ Justin Bieber, you motherf**kers!”

But it didn’t end there; Armstrong took off his guitar and said, “Let me show you what one minute f**kin’ means.” He then spent the remainder of that final minute smashing his guitar on the stage, with other bandmates following suit. With a closing remark, “We’ll be back,” the band marched offstage.

You can watch the entire transaction (unedited) unfolding below, thanks to a fan who posted it on YouTube. If you want to see if anything else interesting transpires at the iHeartRadio Festival, you can watch it streaming live tonight on Yahoo! starting at 7:00 p.m. PDT.

About the Author

Tim Ferrar's interest in pop and rock started as a child, listening to Top-40 radio for hours on end while playing air guitar in his bedroom. Eventually air guitar led to electric guitar, and Tim began playing in bands and writing his own songs. With an admitted weakness for "a great hook or a great guitar riff," Tim's musical tastes are broad and varied, ranging from Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga on the pop side to Bon Jovi and Foo Fighters on the rock side- making him the ideal guy to cover our Rock and Pop categories. By day, Tim is a mild-mannered accountant in Chicago. By night, he rocks out on electric guitar in a cover band in various clubs around town- much to the surprise of some of his clients.
