This publication will keep details to a minimum, but be advised that the following subject matter may still be disturbing.
Watkins, 36, had been set to stand trial yesterday at Cardiff Crown Court, and had previously vehemently denied a series of charges involving child porn and sex crimes against children—charges which also included raping a baby. But in court, Watkins changed his plea to guilty on most of the charges, continuing to deny the charges of rape, but admitting two counts of attempted rape of a baby.
Two unnamed female co-defendants, aged 21 and 24, also entered guilty pleas to sex abuse charges, including sexual abuse of their own children in collusion with the charges against Watkins.
Much of the evidence accrued for the trial had come from computers and mobile phones which contained revealing text messages and emails between the co-defendants as to their activities, as well child porn and video recordings of the rock singer engaging in sex acts with babies and under-aged girls. Some of the material was too disturbing and graphic for the media to report.
Prosecutor Chris Clee QC claimed to the court that Watkins was a “committed and determined pedophile” and that the female co-defendants standing with him had not only sexually abused their own children but had “made them available to Watkins for abuse.”
The guilty pleas essentially put an end to the trial, sparing the jury having to view excessively disturbing material, according to the justice. The South Wales Police said the investigation against Watkins would continue as they attempted to find more victims and witnesses.
Lostprophets went on an indefinite hiatus in late 2012 when child sex charges were first brought against Watkins. The band announced their official breakup last month.
Watkins will be sentenced December 18.
