‘Journey To The West’ Looks Like A Mixed Bag Of Terrible CG and Stephen Chow Insanity

Stephen Chow is one of the most prolific filmmakers currently in the game. He’s always writing and directing something or attached as producer to a new project. Well, his newest film ‘Journey To The West’ has him co-writing, co-directing, and producing. He won’t be starring this time around but after viewing the trailer his trademark style is more than evident.

Stephen Chow’s visual aesthetic is almost as cool as it is goofy. That’s a rarely achieved balancing act. From the Hatchet Gang in Kung Fu Hustle to the protagonist in Shaolin Soccer, Chow’s visual and narrative choices are ballsy and extremely unconventional. His mixture of Looney Toons-esgue violence with quintessentially human characters make for an endlessly spellbinding viewing experience.

Hopefully, Journey To The West will be near to the quality of his last few entries. It looks doubtful, judging from this trailer. But anything is possible.
