Although 2012 was a pretty quiet year on the R&B tip, a few songs from the genre made some noise, so we’d like to pay them respect. Some of you guys might have even forgotten about these songs, since a couple of them weren’t given as much attention as hip-hop/rap this year. As a matter of fact, some of these songs weren’t even given proper radio play. But they still stand out as some of the best R&B tracks I sang along to all year. Here are some of 2012’s best R&B songs:
11. “Rich Hipster” – Chrisette Michele feat. Wale
For all those cool folks who love to go against the grain, this song’s for you.
10. “F**k The City Up” – Chris Brown
Now this is the kind of CB music people like! When Chris Brown hops on a piece of banging production, his vocal delivery seems to come more alive. On this one, he’s as live as it gets.
9. “Sorry” – Ciara
All she wanted was an apology. Instead of getting that, she got nothing. At least we got a hit song out of it.
8. “Don’t Judge Me” – Chris Brown
Amidst the controversy and hate still surrounding Chris Brown, he still manages to put out great music. This song presents a heartfelt message to the Chris Brown doubters that still look down on him.
7. “Back To Love” – Bilal
Bilal is vastly underrated. When he makes such endearing songs like this, it pains us to know that mainstream radio won’t even play it. At least we appreciate you, Bilal!
6. “Believe In Us” – Mint Condition
The loveliest R&B band in the land still makes great music. For those of you who don’t know about this great song, now you know. You’re welcome.
5. “Birthday Cake (Remix)” – Rihanna feat. Chris Brown
Filthiest song of the year? Without question. This banger made it quite evident that this couple weren’t finished with each other yet.
4. “Put It Down” – Brandy feat. Chris Brown
Brandy appreciates a bad boy. When she enlisted Chris Brown’s help for this single, it made a whole hell of a lotta sense. That chorus is too catchy to forget, ain’t it?
3. “Diamonds” – Rihanna
Did anyone else get as inspired as I did when this song came on? Rihanna made everyone feel like perfect diamonds in the sky. Thanks for making us feel better about ourselves, Ri Ri!
2. “Adorn” – Miguel
Miguel had a breakout year. Thanks to this seductive tune, this singer’s success was much deserved.
1. “Thinking About You” – Frank Ocean
Frank Ocean owned 2012. His album was packed with non-skippable tunes and his presence was much stronger than year’s past. This song (and its super out-there video) is the best R&B song of 2012. Keep swimming to the promised land, Frank.
