Here’s the news: The Pixies have released a second limited edition EP called, appropriately, EP2. If you go by the accompanying single “Blue Eyed Hexe” (video below), it’s probably pretty good.
The part that lots of media outlets are calling “news,” but really isn’t that big a deal, is that the EP release is a “surprise.” Whether that spin was the Pixies’ idea or not, it doesn’t really work. First off—while the actual release of the EP may have been previously unannounced, last fall’s EP1 was a dead giveaway that there was an EP2 coming. Second—in the shadow of Beyoncé’s master-stroke surprise release just three weeks ago, no one ought to even be trying to stage a surprise release.
P.R. snafus aside, EP2 should help the Pixies steer away some of the unwanted attention from their recent revolving door of bass players, and more toward their music. The EP is available only from the Pixies’ website, with 4000 limited edition vinyl copies available with a hoodie and a digital version—or, if you don’t care about that other stuff, a simple direct download purchase.
Meanwhile, take a listen to “Blue Eyed Hexe” and see what you think!
