Pop Rewind: Steve Winwood “Back In the High Life”

Steve Winwood has been performing for nearly five decades, in bands like Traffic (for which he was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), the Spencer Davis Group, and the supergroup Blind Faith (with fellow rocker Eric Clapton). But he’s probably best known for his solo career, which blossomed in the 1980’s. His blue-eyed soul approach to 80’s synth-pop, together with a slight rasp in his voice, made his sound unforgettable.

The two videos below are from what could be argued as Winwood’s most notable album, Back in the High Life. The first track, “Higher Love,” is the song that first put Steve Winwood on my radar way back when; the second track, the album’s title track, is one of my personal favorites.

BTW, Steve Winwood is still active, and has announced a fresh set of tour dates through May and June. Meanwhile, enjoy his stuff here!

About the Author

Tim Ferrar's interest in pop and rock started as a child, listening to Top-40 radio for hours on end while playing air guitar in his bedroom. Eventually air guitar led to electric guitar, and Tim began playing in bands and writing his own songs. With an admitted weakness for "a great hook or a great guitar riff," Tim's musical tastes are broad and varied, ranging from Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga on the pop side to Bon Jovi and Foo Fighters on the rock side- making him the ideal guy to cover our Rock and Pop categories. By day, Tim is a mild-mannered accountant in Chicago. By night, he rocks out on electric guitar in a cover band in various clubs around town- much to the surprise of some of his clients.
