Pop Rewind: Wham! “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”

Considering that George Michael is reportedly performing at the London Olympics closing ceremonies this weekend, I thought it would be fun to go back to the era that first made him famous—the short lived, high profile 80s Brit-pop duo called Wham!

The song below, “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” was the opening track of Wham!’s top-selling album Make It Big (1984), and is one of their most widely remembered songs. I’m not posting this because I particularly like the song—to me, it is one of those songs that is “annoyingly catchy”, meaning you don’t have to like it for it to stay in your brain and nag you. But it’s a significant piece of 80’s music history, and for better or worse, it kickstarted George Michael’s career. He went on to have a solo career that certainly eclipsed his Wham! days, but even though he looked upon those early days with a bit of disdain, the fact remains that there wouldn’t have been a George Michael solo career without Wham!

So there you have it. Here’s the video. Watch it, and cringe along with me.

About the Author

Tim Ferrar's interest in pop and rock started as a child, listening to Top-40 radio for hours on end while playing air guitar in his bedroom. Eventually air guitar led to electric guitar, and Tim began playing in bands and writing his own songs. With an admitted weakness for "a great hook or a great guitar riff," Tim's musical tastes are broad and varied, ranging from Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga on the pop side to Bon Jovi and Foo Fighters on the rock side- making him the ideal guy to cover our Rock and Pop categories. By day, Tim is a mild-mannered accountant in Chicago. By night, he rocks out on electric guitar in a cover band in various clubs around town- much to the surprise of some of his clients.
