Rock Rewind: Elvis Presley “That’s Alright Mama,” “Heartbreak Hotel”

I mentioned in last week’s rewind that this week marks the 36th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley. As has become the custom, fans gathered yesterday for a vigil at the singer’s grave at Graceland. So for this week, I thought it would be cool to pull out two key singles from Elvis’ early years.

“That’s Alright Mama” was Elvis’ very first commercial release, recorded on Sam Phillips’ Sun Records label in Memphis. It also went on to become Elvis’ first gold record.

“Heartbreak Hotel” presented another set of firsts for the rising star. It was his first single on his new label RCA Records; it was his first chart success, going to Number 1 on the charts; and it was his first record to go platinum.

Both singles can be played below. The “Heartbreak Hotel” video is a historic live performance from the Milton Berle Show. Remember, and enjoy!

About the Author

Tim Ferrar's interest in pop and rock started as a child, listening to Top-40 radio for hours on end while playing air guitar in his bedroom. Eventually air guitar led to electric guitar, and Tim began playing in bands and writing his own songs. With an admitted weakness for "a great hook or a great guitar riff," Tim's musical tastes are broad and varied, ranging from Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga on the pop side to Bon Jovi and Foo Fighters on the rock side- making him the ideal guy to cover our Rock and Pop categories. By day, Tim is a mild-mannered accountant in Chicago. By night, he rocks out on electric guitar in a cover band in various clubs around town- much to the surprise of some of his clients.
