Rock Rewind: Journey “Faithfully”

Journey’s power ballad “Faithfully” dates back to 1983, and was the second single off the band’s album Frontiers. It certainly isn’t their rockin’-est tune, nor was it their biggest charting hit. In fact, the video below is a bit lame by today’s high-tech standards.

So…why is it on the Rock Rewind this week? Because over time, “Faithfully” has become Journey’s most recognizable tune, and for good reason. It’s not just that the song is beautiful; it’s also what the song is about.  It strips back all the glitz, glam and pyrotechnics of the rock scene to reveal the loneliness that comes with months spent on the road, telling us that sometimes behind the facade is a guy who just loves and misses his wife, and is willing to forego the temptation of instant gratification to stay faithful to her. No wonder this song was played at almost every wedding in the 1990s.

“Faithfully” has become timeless because it makes a statement that flies in the face of rock & roll culture with its fast living and willing groupies: true love is possible, even for a rock star.

About the Author

Tim Ferrar's interest in pop and rock started as a child, listening to Top-40 radio for hours on end while playing air guitar in his bedroom. Eventually air guitar led to electric guitar, and Tim began playing in bands and writing his own songs. With an admitted weakness for "a great hook or a great guitar riff," Tim's musical tastes are broad and varied, ranging from Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga on the pop side to Bon Jovi and Foo Fighters on the rock side- making him the ideal guy to cover our Rock and Pop categories. By day, Tim is a mild-mannered accountant in Chicago. By night, he rocks out on electric guitar in a cover band in various clubs around town- much to the surprise of some of his clients.
