Rock Rewind: Mr. Mister “Broken Wings”

This one often falls into the category of Who-Did-That-Song?, in that many people recognize the song but not everyone knows the band behind it. Mr. Mister only released three albums during their run in the 1980s; of those three, their second, Welcome To the Real World, was their one smash success; and “Broken Wings” was one of the three Top-10 singles from that record, and possibly their most widely remembered tune to date.

Besides helping to shape the sound of 80’s rock during their brief period of stardom, Mr. Mister were also known for their lyricism, which frequently waxed spiritual. Another hit off of Welcome to the Real World, “Kyrie,” reads like a prayer, and that and subsequent tunes often raised questions as to the band members’ faith. (“Healing Waters” off their Go On.. LP even garnered a Grammy nomination in the Gospel Performance category.) In multiple interviews since, front man Richard Page expressed concerns about the Christian label being placed on the band.

Mr. Mister disbanded in 1990 after RCA Records decided to shelve their fourth album Pull, which finally got released in 2010. The band members have since gone on to work on other projects. They left us this gem, though. Enjoy!

About the Author

Tim Ferrar's interest in pop and rock started as a child, listening to Top-40 radio for hours on end while playing air guitar in his bedroom. Eventually air guitar led to electric guitar, and Tim began playing in bands and writing his own songs. With an admitted weakness for "a great hook or a great guitar riff," Tim's musical tastes are broad and varied, ranging from Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga on the pop side to Bon Jovi and Foo Fighters on the rock side- making him the ideal guy to cover our Rock and Pop categories. By day, Tim is a mild-mannered accountant in Chicago. By night, he rocks out on electric guitar in a cover band in various clubs around town- much to the surprise of some of his clients.
