The screenwriters that brought you The Descendants are now branching out into directing. Jim Rash and Nat Faxon have concocted a coming of age film called The Way Way Back. It centers around an introverted teen, his overbearing pseudo step-father and his lack of confidence.
Inevitably our young protagonist meets a kindly theme park manager who helps bring him our of this shell. The film appears boilerplate and faily standard for these types of coming-of-age films but Sam Rockwell, who plays the manager, appears to deliver a sincerely charming performance.
Here’s hoping that Faxon and Rash can capture the intimate family dynamics that make The Descendants such a wonderful film.
