Up-and Comers: Josh Pyke

While indie pop/rock singer-songwriter Josh Pyke is perhaps a new name for some here in the US, in his homeland of Australia it’s almost difficult to classify him as an up-and-comer, since he’s been a charting artist there for several years. His first three albums all hit the Top 5 on the ARIA charts, and his songs are regular fare on national radio Triple J over there.

It should come as no surprise then, to Aussies, at least, that there is plenty of anticipation already building for Pkye’s upcoming release The Beginning and End of Everything, set for a July 5 release date. The advance single “Leeward Side” is already generating a lot of buzz in the Twitter-verse, and with good reason: it’s really, really catchy. If this song is any indication of what the rest of the album is going to be like, this could very well be a breakout moment for him.

No official video is currently available for “Leeward Side,” but you can listen to the song on the video below. The second video is a teaser for the new album and features the opening track “Bug-Eyed Beauty.” Have a listen to both of them. You’ll be glad you did.

Growing up in Portland, Oregon, Kim Phelps found her inspiration and love for music listening to local bands play in the coffeehouses around town. She soon found her own voice as a singer-songwriter, and eventually began playing her own gigs in the coffee shops. Her personal influences include Ani DiFranco, Indigo Girls, Ingrid Michaelson and Cat Power, but as an indie musician herself, she has an affinity for any band or artist who pursues creative freedom on the outskirts of the music industry. As our Indie correspondent, Kim makes a point of highlighting up-and-coming independent acts who are creating a buzz and building an audience. When she's not blogging for us or playing in the coffee shops, Kim works as a barista herself to help pay the bills. She currently lives in Seattle, Washington.
