The Walking Dead is one of the most popular comic books of the last decade. It also happens to be one of the most popular TV shows currently airing. The show and the comic both have hordes of dedicated fans who eagerly away the next installment of the adventures of Rick Grimes and his zombie killing cadre friends.
Walking Dead is AMC’s most popular show. It pulls higher ratings than Breaking Bad and Mad Men. And with both of those shows ending Walking Dead is AMC’s trump card. It’s their big draw. Logically, AMC is looking to get as much of the Walking Dead audience to come to the TV set as possible, as often as possible. As such, the station has announced that they’ll be spinning of a new TV show set in the universe of Walking Dead. The new show currently does not have a name but series producers Gale Anne Hurd, Robert Kirkman and David Alpert.
Robert Kirkman had this to say about the new show:
‘After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.’
AMC President Charlie Collier had this to say:
‘Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer. We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.’
The Walking Dead is about to enter its fourth season. With this spinoff focusing new characters and a new story, here’s hoping AMC doesn’t over saturate the market.
